Tour around the Fischmarkt - Part 1

Coming from one of the multi storey car parks, having reached the old town centre, we start our city tour at the old harbour.

The 'Schwedenspeicher' was built from 1692 to 1705 as a provisions house for the Swedish garrison - from this is the derived the vernacular name - directly at the entrance to the old harbour after the old provisions house proved to be insufficient when Stade was under siege in 1675/76.

The 41 metres long and 16 metres wide building has a foundation of 10 metres long poles towards the water side, which was put on an existing ashlar masonry.
The three levels above the ground floor are being carried by each two mostly preserved timber constructions with an exterior of brickwork. According to the original usage, there are hoisting-bays on the long sides.

The rather unadorned building is being decorated by the sandstone portal towards the street, which is being bordered by pilasters, poles which obtrude from the wall. The broken gable shows a sandstone relief on a pedestal, a cartouche with the monogram CXII of the then reigning king Charles XII of Sweden, above a king's crown.
Noticeable are the long-stretched airing dormer in the tiled roof.

As long as Stade was a fortification, official till 1867, practically till 1880/81, the storage was used by the military and was still used for storage when the city bought the building after 1909. The question of a meaningful usage of this unique monument of Swedish great power has been discussed for a long time before in 1975, also due to the influence of an action group, restoration work started. Since the end of 1977 the storage building has a new task as amuseum.
