'Porta Coeli' (heaven's gate) was the name of the old Cistercian monastery, which gave Himmelpforten its name.

For many children, the name is reason to write and send a letter to 'Father Christmas in Himmelpforten' to tell him their big and small wishes every year shortly before Christmas. Father Christmas will of course answer every letter individually... Father Christmas can also be reached online at http://www.himmelpforten.de!

But the joined community Himmelpforten with a population of over 9000, including the villages

Düdenbüttel, Engelschoff, Großenwörden, Hammah and of course Himmelpforten
has a lot more to offer than its unique name.

Diverse landscapes with forests, meadows, bogs and idyllic located villages are ideal for relaxing walks, for example through the beck and meadow landscape of Horsterbeck and over the dike of the Oste. The flat countryside is also ideal for long cycle tours on numerous well developed cycle trails. Country Inns offer the hiker opportunities to have a bite to eat or drink while on tour.

Himmelpforten is located in the northwestern part of the rural district Stade and can be reached easily via the B 73 or the railway line Hamburg-Cuxhaven.

Destinations like the local recreation area Wingst, the Elbe, the Alte Land, the pretty city of Stade with its romantic old town are within easy reach. In just an hour by car one arrives at the North Sea or Hamburg.
